Metadata Merging Malarkey
One year ago, I made a blog post covering the details behind my daily recording sessions for Julibrary 2020. This year, in addition to the daily recording process, I also contributed to the crowdsource by writing a handful of scripts to automate the point system tracking process and assist with metadata management. With each successive year, Julibrary continues to grow: with a whopping 138 unique participants over the past month. By writing a few scripts, dozens of hours can be spared; manually tracking whether a participant submitted for any given day, submitted late for a previous day, or kept their metadata sheet up-to-date. Check out the video below for a full breakdown on the scripts I wrote for Julibrary 2021!
Julibrary Stats & Analytics
Like last year, I also maintained a tracker of users’ submissions and adherance to Julibrary’s point system. There are some interesting results, though I’ll give you a chance to see for yourself first. To directly view the chart, I recommend looking at it here, as the data visualization service I’m using (DataWrapper) won’t let me change the background color without upgrading to an Enterprise account….
I found it pretty interesting how clearly there’s an exponential decay in number of users tied for first. There’s also an interesting spike/drop in number of submissions on Saturday/Sunday during the middle of the month. And finally, the highest spike in number of late submissions came on July 4th; perhaps there were a fair number of participants recording fireworks (and drinking) who decided to edit and submit in the days thereafter.
It’s safe to say I’m already looking forward to next Julibrary!
