The Story…
In the Fall of 2017, a close friend and gaming enthusiast encountered two dreaded setbacks: a broken controller and early signs of ergonomic complications (namely Rapid Strain Injuries associated with repetitive thumb movement). In an effort to address both problems, I began researching alternative controllers. Unable to find much that would tailor to his specific conditions, I decided to build one myself. After producing the first Stickless Controller and sharing images of it across the internet, I received overwhelming feedback from others looking to design one to meet their own needs. A few stacks of business registration paperwork later, Stickless was born.
Research
Developing a custom controller that remedied my friend’s impairments without impeding upon the need for fine control of game mechanics proved to be a bit of an undertaking. After conducting research on ergonomics and alternative controllers currently in production, a few pre-set layouts were made. However, hand and wrist problems come in a wide range of severity. Instead of opting for static faceplates with a few selectable layouts, each faceplate is fully customizable to meet the needs of the individual. I’ve worked with gamers that are missing digits, partially paralyzed, have severe tendinitis, and more to design button orientation appropriately.
Takeaways
I never quite expected to receive the interest that Stickless ended up garnering. Having produced well over a hundred unique controllers, I’ve gained a newfound respect for the accessibility-oriented communities within and outside the gaming industry. I eagerly look forward to carrying some of the marketing, accounting, electrical, woodworking, and organizational skills learned along the way into future hobbies and careers.
